Certified
Addictions Counselor (CAC) By
Michael Connelly, MA, LAC Welcome! The Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC) program was developed by the State of Colorado, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division (ADAD) to prepare people to become substance abuse treatment professionals. Certified addictions counselors have the knowledge, skills, training and work experience in the treatment of substance abuse issues that distinguish the CAC from other health care professionals. The goal is to equip counselors to work effectively with substance abuse clients in a broad range of treatment settings. The impact of substance abuse is pervasive in our society, touching virtually everyone. From young adolescents through seniors, it shows up in our schools, work, families and communities. Our healthcare, law enforcement, judicial, educational and human service systems struggle to deal with the complex issues involved with substance abuse. That is why a specialty in addictions counseling was developed and why this work continues to be so important to so many people. The CAC credential signifies the person has achieved a level of professional competence and effectiveness in providing substance abuse treatment services. What
