This workshop
will explore clinical issues treating Native Americans with substance
abuse problems. The class focuses on treatment techniques that work
while emphasis is placed on Colorado tribes. Students will learn
about ceremonies and the Red Road Approach with experiential practice. All participants must participate in herbal cleansing and the talking circle to get credit for this class. |

This class focuses on the bodies needs for specific nutrients, problem
areas that may develop as a result of nutritional deficiencies,
and the importance of feeding the body what it needs in order to
thrive. How the body uses nutrients will be discussed, how the cells
select from the available nutrients the ones they need to perform
their role in maintaining health, and the cascade effect of disease
processes as the body deals with deficiencies. This class lays a
framework for teaching clients about self care as they leave the
treatment setting. |

This course covers basic Anatomy & Physiology
of the human body as a basic for understanding addictive substance
use. How drugs/chemicals effect the body and how the body responds
to them will be included. Sedative Hypnotic drugs, including alcohol,
barbiturates, sleepers, benzodiazpines, and date rape drugs, will
be discussed in addition to the narcotic and inhalant groups. |

SASSI is a brief psychological measure designed to detect substance
use/abuse and dependence in individuals regardless of their attempts
to minimize or deny such use. Participants will learn to properly
administer, score, profile, and clinically apply the results of the
SASSI. With 93% accuracy, the SASSI is appropriate for assessment
of both adults and adolescents. |

Participating in Smoking cessation while in treatment has been associated with a 25% greater likelihood of long-term abstinence from alcohol and other drugs. This course is intended to reinforce that nicotine is a drug, to educate about the health-related effects of nicotine use for the general population as well as substance users, to understand the reasons why clients smoke. to learn skills for tobacco cessation treatment and to be able to access tobacco cessation resources. |

This class provides insight into the development and storage of trauma effects in the body. Failure to address the biological component of trauma reduces effectiveness in client care and has a continuing influence in the inability of clients to retain treatment gains. Trauma is often addressed as a cognitive and/or emotional event; overlooking the knowledge that trauma is primarily stored as a physiological event. The class will focus on the body’s protective mechanisms, how they are disrupted, and the need for assisting clients in the healing process. |

With 30-60% of clients in substance abuse treatment programs meeting criteria for post traumatic stress disorder, it is imperative that counselors are informed of its devastating effects. This course will increase knowledge regarding the link between trauma and behavioral addictions. It will define and review trauma related diagnoses, identify signs and symptoms of trauma, and discuss the psychobiology of trauma. Upon completion, the participant will be able to include screening for trauma in their assessment and evaluation. Finally, the class will aid the practitioner in developing a sense of when to make an appropriate referral for specialized treatment and how to recognize when a history of trauma may be impeding therapeutic progress. |
