Motivational Interviewing is a style of working with clients which is designed to increase their personal motivation to change non-productive behaviors. This workshop will teach counselors to match interventions to six stages of readiness-for-change. It will emphasize motivational strategies that include how to help the client resolve ambivalence impasses that impede change, how to identify the personal goals that will keep the client internally motivated to work in a positive direction, and how to remove obstacles to change. This workshop is based on the book by Stephen Rollick and William Miller. Although the Motivational Interviewing approach was developed for treatment of addictive behavior disorders, it lends itself to the treatment of any chronic, relapsing condition in which the client is ambivalent about change. Addiction Counseling is a pre-requisite.
